ArcelorMittal Luxembourg
ArcelorMittal Luxembourg: Overview of Long Products
The Long Products segment represents the group’s historical and industrial heartland in the country, featuring production sites that are now global benchmarks.
Here is a brief overview structured around its three pillars:
1. Key Production Sites
The "Long Products Luxembourg" division employs approximately 2,100 people across three major sites:
- Differdange (The "Plant of Records"): Specialized in giant beams. This is the birthplace of the "Jumbo," the largest beam in the world. Its steel was used in the construction of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai and the One World Trade Center in New York.
- Belval (The Sheet Piling Leader): This is the world’s largest production site for steel sheet piles (used for foundations, ports, and underground parking). The site also operates a Train Moyen Belval (TMB) for angles and light beams.
- Rodange: This site specializes in high-value-added products such as crane rails (used in the world’s largest ports) and special sections.
2. World-Renowned Products
ArcelorMittal Luxembourg does not just manufacture steel; it creates specific technical solutions:
- HISTAR® Beams: High-performance steel that allows for a reduction in structural weight (and consequently CO₂ emissions) by up to 40%.
- AZ®-800 Sheet Piles: The widest on the market, optimizing installation time on civil engineering sites.
3. Innovation and Sustainability (XCarb®)
Luxembourg serves as the group's laboratory for decarbonization:
- Electric Route: Unlike traditional blast furnaces, Luxembourg sites utilize Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF) to recycle scrap metal.
- Circular Economy: Approximately 98% of the material used to produce liquid steel in Luxembourg comes from recycling.
- R&D: The global research center for long products is located in Esch-sur-Alzette.
The group’s new global headquarters, currently under construction in Kirchberg, is a technological showcase: it incorporates nearly 10,000 tonnes of "Made in Luxembourg" steel and is designed as a model of sustainable architecture.
